19 March, 2015– Animal Nepal this month was honoured to receive a visit from a high level team from The Donkey Sanctuary UK. The purpose of the visit was to observe Animal Nepal’s Working Equine Outreach Programme and discuss further collaboration. The DSUK team consisted of Stephen Blakeway, Julia Smith and Dr. Ramesh Kumar.
The visit started with a 3 day workshop on advocacy and brick factories organised by The Brooke, where Animal Nepal’s President Pramada Shah presented Animal Nepal’s involvement in setting up Brick Clean Network and advocating for better standards for working equines. On the fourth day the team visited Chhampi brick factory in Lalitpur where Mr. Blakeway focused on the welfare assessment of working animals. The day was followed by a visit to our Donkey Sanctuary. The team was happy to see the transformation of some of our rescued animals. The fifth day marked the meeting of Animal Nepal and DSUK team at our head office followed by some sight-seeing at the Patan Durbar Square.
Donkey Sanctuary UK as a collaborating partner of Animal Nepal has been supporting Animal Nepal’s working equines outreach programme since 2009. Animal Nepal, with the support of The Donkey Sanctuary, now works in over fifteen brick factories, organising regular health camps and educates the owners and handlers.
During the visit the DSUK team shared its willingness to continue supporting our outreach programme’ in the future. The team also showed interest in working together through Brick Clean Network to improve living condition of working animals through standards and legislation.
Thank you Donkey Sanctuary UK on behalf of the working equines of Nepal!
